Peercoin on Raspberry Pi

Congratulations to bengx from reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/28hxr5/peercoin_on_raspberry_pi_get_10_ppc_for_setting/cibjq9z

Tip sent.

I’m thinking of turning this into a peer4commit project now that a link to github repo is no longer required.

Pros:

[ul][li]I would no longer be responsible for storing the funds and could access them when away from own computer[/li]
[li]It would make it more transparent as all distributions would be easier to see[/li]
[li]Easy way for people to donate to continue the project[/li][/ul]

Cons:

[ul][li]Tips would need to be sent to an email address, so people receiving tips would need to post or PM their email and then log into peer4commit to retrieve tip[/li]
[li]The person receiving the tip would be in charge of deciding which PPC address to sent the tip to. This may make verification less certain as tip may not go to the address visible in the photo[/li][/ul]

There might be other reasons too. Will leave this open for a few days before setting it up on peer4commit.

No, don’t do it. It is is impossible to verify. What TeamViewer, don’t fool around people.
I can get 10 tips for ā€œrunningā€ a node by 22:00, set up virtual machine, post pictures… teamviewer… river333 pays up. New forum account, new VPS, new ā€œnodeā€, river333 pays up. Repeat.

Beside this being totally wrong and dishonest it does not actually help the network. Since it’s not about 50nodes on one server farm it is about 50 nodes over area size of Texas, or Brazil.
Ok thanks peerchemist, I think you’re probably right. Had doubts but just hoping for a new way because I’m getting tons of requests to allow non-RPi nodes. Birdonwheels5, I suppose it will have to wait until someone comes up with a better method of verification. The same cheat would be possible to some extent now but there’s no point making it easier.
The same thing could be done if you had multiple pis… Which some people do. I had no intent of cheating the system… If you take a look at my reddit profile, I try to contribute to communities (Reddcoin and Myriadcoin), not detract from them. But I understand if you don’t want to do this. I’m trying to think of another way to verify this… I could let you teamviewer into the host, and not the VM. That way you’d be able to see EVERYTHING on the computer (all my virtual machines and servers), but it would be a risk on my part, although I don’t feel you would try to do anything malicious. Give it some thought, let the community give their input, and if you want you can google my name (birdonwheels5). Most of the stuff that comes up has to do with minecraft though xD Oh, you can even see a video I made for my school project

Wow, I was looking through the search results, and I can see like everything, even my milkyway@home account o.o

But yeah, let me know what you think. Again, I can understand if you refuse. I just wanted to help out, and get my feet wet with Peercoin at the same time

I wasn’t at all suggesting you aren’t trustworthy, sorry if it gave that impression. My point is that the funds used for tipping aren’t mine, they were given to me on the assumption that they would be distributed for Raspberry Pi nodes. Any tip I send you would be my own, and I’m only willing to do that if it helps lead to setting up a project for tips for other types of nodes. If the method for verification couldn’t be used at a large scale for that project then it’s not worth experimenting with. I’m not as large a holder as many people around here.

Ah alright. I see where you’re coming from. Well it was worth a try. I might end up setting up a node anyways for the fun of it, if I have some extra time on my hands once my summer class is finished

That would be great. And you could also consider getting a Raspberry Pi

Peerbox project will cover Beaglebone too, however dev does not have access to Beaglebone so it’s on the wait list.
Cool to know! But I was serious about getting an R-Pi. I’m not a Ford vs Chevy kind of guy about this stuff.

Might be worth kicking in a few bucks/PPC/mBTC to get the dev a BBB. Adafruit takes Bitcoin; maybe they could be convinced to take PPC too?

Node up and running ;D

NICE!! ;D

Congratulations to hZti. Your tip has been sent

yeah would be helpful, maybe just gather the funds so the dev can purchase one ?

If I weren’t behind on my rent I’d put an order in right now and have one sent directly to the dev (if I knew who to send it to, also). Maybe in a week or so after I get my next payment from my client.

no need to rush things, maybe first make a list of devices we want to support, devices will be added whenever is possible

Congratulations to pivoxi.

Can anyone explain to me the difference in simply having your wallet open and minting and running a ā€œfull nodeā€?

What is the benefit of being a ā€œfull nodeā€ that you do not gain from just having a wallet online 24/7? It’s not the easiest question to google…

difference is the number of connections, a full node has 9 connections or more, normal node has 8 or less
the benefit is not for you but for the other peers in the network that try to connect, when you are a full node, more connections are available

So do I understand correctly that if you want to have a decentralized network, you have to run a full node, not just a node? Or can a bunch of people running regular wallets still make a network be decentralized?

Good thread on this here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1scd4z/im_running_a_full_node_and_so_should_you/

my node is dead of sdcard(kingston …) failure only after 2 months, has anyone run into this ? maybe it’s better to point datadir to an usb stick instead if sdcard does not like a lot of read/write .
