after creating my own genesis, i'm stuck at block 1 .. tried CPU mining for 2 days, no block increase 😦
I'd like to use my S9 miners for this but when I type "getwork" into RPC console, I get "Peercoin is downloading blocks..."
are those 2 different errors? or are they related to each other? could someone help me out please?
Avatar

does S9 support getwork?
Avatar
Nohea 03-May-18 09:45 AM
@bibz i used a S9 to mine a peercoin-based altcoin. But i did it by setting up my own UNOMP pool, then setting that pool as the stratum host in the antminer.
If you have an altcoin starting at difficulty 1.0 ( << 32) it should be no problem to CPU mine it.

ok great thanks @Nohea

Hrobeers is right about this rfc being needed for this functionality, because otherwise you'd have to sign the coinstake and the coinbase with the same private key. My interpretation of 'cold minting' is that of being able to sign the transaction offline, move the signed transaction to a hot node (via for example an intermediary external drive with a hardware switch) and mint when the time comes. By that definition, the frequency with which you have to use the cold wallet to sign things i...
This seems straightforward. I would worry about the security implications, but because this complication was added by Peercoin for convenience, I trust Bitcoin's security here is fine. Instead, I want to ask about future maintenance. Sunny required this signature because it was convenient to do so in the code, correct? From that perspective, how much future maintenance will this rfc generate when merging Bitcoin code in the future?

Is there really a demand for this? I'm not convinced people would actually use it. That's the topic I meant when I suggested a community discussion, whatever the name of the solution. The RFC says it "requires minimal changes to the protocol, provided that RFC-0002 and RFC-0004 are implemented", but RFC-0002 is certainly not a small change. And since RFC-0002's other motivation is not needed, its sole purpose is the implem...

Absolutely, multisig minting and minting pools is a must for the future of the Peercoin. People will use it if given the proper tools to handle the process.
@sigmike this still leaves a way for t>actual cold< minting as described in your proposal.

Why isn't mquandalle's motivation listed in the RFC motivations? Is it just implicit? As mquandalle said this RFC enables burning the coin age when a stakeholder mints on multiple chains (or just the wrong chain). Something similar is already implemented in Peercoin at node level to make the block disapear when the same stake is used on multiple chains. So the attacker only loses the compound interests of the reward he didn't get, and he is allowed to continue minting other blocks with thi...

The more complete description of mquandalle's proposal is described in 'alternatives'. I just want to be sure that you realize that this RFC would not allow for mquandalle's proposal to be implemented, because the minter's budget is non-zero (meaning the transaction can be included as Coinstake transaction, but not as a normal transaction). Therefore, that increased punishment would not occur through this RFC, if I am understanding what you're saying correctly, so it is not an advantage of ...
Avatar
GitHub BOT 28-May-18 06:11 AM
I do not agree with a 1KB budget for the coinbase. It is not needed as the coinbase is not allowed to have any inputs.
I don't believe this changes compared to today. Today minters vote by choosing a client implementation, with this change some minters would vote by choosing a pool, I don't see any differences here.
I do not agree on limiting coinbase transaction (see other comments).
Avatar
GitHub BOT 28-May-18 06:06 PM
The pool operator has the power to e.g. blackball certain transactions or choose to orphan certain blocks without the participants even being aware of it. Voting for a representative is not necessarily the same as direct democracy.
Is there anything that prevents the minter from turning a 1 PPC block reward into 100 UTXOs? What is the harm in additional spam protection? What is your response to this thread: https://talk.peercoin.net/t/unlimited-coinbase-data/7856
It is choosing a convention. Choosing a convention always has at least the disadvantage of that once chosen you have to unchoose it if you want something else.

GitHub BOT 28-May-18 06:21 PM
"It's good for the goal of this RFC but it sounds weird. We would say that in a multisig coinstake the block only needs to be signed by 1 single key. As a generic rule I would have expected that to be decided by the owner of the multisig. Like they decide how many keys are necessary to spend, and which ones. It's much more complex to implement that way, so I understand why we would not. But this decision will stay forever. So it's a drawback, but not a big one." ~Sigmike
Avatar
GitHub BOT 29-May-18 03:41 AM
If you want to owner to decide, you a different script type with possibly a new OP_CODE. This is still possible without reverting this RFC. We cannot encode extra information into a standard multisig script, therefore it is needed to fix the number of required signatures in the protocol for minting such a script. Also be aware that current block format does not allow multiple block signatures and that passing around a block for signatures after finding stake increases the chance of orphaning.
Avatar
GitHub BOT 29-May-18 03:48 AM
I see, we do not have the opportunity cost like bitcoin miners do. I'd rather implement a block standardness rule that would orphan to large coinbases like is implemented to prevent multi chain minting (this way an operational limit is set rather than a protocol limit). For peer-to-peer mining pools it can make sense to split the coinbase in many outputs, so I do not like limiting the possibilities here as it would reduce bitcoin compatibility. Since this issue already exist in current p...

GitHub BOT 29-May-18 03:55 AM
Today voters also trust the client developers they implement what they say which is similar to voting for a representative (being the client implementation). Pools are transparent on what they do on chain because of it's public nature, the threshold to validate the pool's behavior is equal to validating the client implementation behavior. The only difference I can see is that a pool can update it's behavior without notice.

What they put on-chain is public, but what they decide not to put can only be inferred. While a particlarly diligent peercoiner can compile their own source code and know what they are running on their own machine, such diligence is not possible with a pool. So there are two governance issues, the first being that as you say the pool can always misbehave with no notice to the owner of the coins. The second is that they could prevent certain transactions from being included or orphan certai...

No, PeerAssets is crazy efficient. 10 - 20 bytes are usually spent on deck spawn. I did 45 cards batched transfer once too, it all fitted in 80 bytes.

GitHub BOT 01-Jun-18 04:54 PM
This is not about the timestamp though. Can you name a specific third party tool that would benefit from splitting the coinstake? Because Peerchemist couldn't name one and said there wasn't anything yet, but there could be in the future.

GitHub BOT 01-Jun-18 05:02 PM
Any protocol fork that changes the transaction or block format, yes. Actually, now that I think about it, this RFC doesn't change the transaction format, so that bullet point can be removed. Supporting both block formats on full nodes, however, is definitely something that will need to happen. An example of a hard fork that doesn't change the block format would be switching from coindays to mint difficulty for chain weight.
Dependencies are drawbacks because a) they require additional work to implement and b) they inherit the drawbacks of their dependencies. If rfc0002 could be implemented independently of rfc0004 without losing any benefits or gaining any additional drawbacks, it would logically be a 'better', or at least more flexible, proposal wouldn't it?
Sure thing, I'll change the language on the next push.

Oh yes sorry. There is actually one. Some tools might watch monetary creation by just parsing the coinbase transactions, while for peercoin you should also watch the coinstake transaction. Therefore some tools might be off in reporting the amount of coins created. I have no evidence for this though, and it is indeed not significant advantage.
Actually this is the same, the block format would not change here either. There still is a coinbase and a coinstake transaction serialized in exactly the same way, so the implications are equal to any other protocol change like the one you mention.
That is like saying it would be better if both rfc0002 and rfc0004 where merged into one rfc?
This is a dangerous alternative as it would mean a transaction has some sort of expiration period. If your transaction is not included soon enough, it will never be.

Great, I'll remove the 'no known advantage' and replace it with that example.
It would indeed be better from the perspective of rfc0002 because it would gain advantages without gaining disadvantages. However, it would make rfc0004 much harder to implement. Modularity allows for separate analysis and pro-con weighing. Ultimately, it is just a convenient convention to explicitly identify dependencies in this way. With the way the rfc numbers are labeled, I think it helps to clarify things.
Ah, I see, so you can add outputs to the coinbase without breaking protocol, but you can't add inputs. So moving the block reward to the coinbase doesn't change the format, it only changes the convention and the calculation of output amounts.
Avatar
GitHub BOT 02-Jun-18 02:28 PM
On the other hand, it would be a way of timelocking transactions, by forward dating the timestamp. I agree it is too complex and not really a viable alternative, but it was literally the only class of alternative I could think of.

I would like to actually seriously consider this question. When forming the next push, it seems like RFC0002 devolves in its drawbacks to basically having none, assuming RFC0004 is implemented. What I mean by this, is that if we are able to do the hardfork at the same time as RFC0004, then there are literally no drawbacks. There is absolutely no reason not to do RFC0002 if we are doing RFC0004. This brings up the question of why we shouldn't merge them into one? The only reason I can c...

Just wondering, has there been any discussion of backporting bip32/Hd wallet support to Peercoin with minting support? Bitcoin has it in core now.
I can think of a use case for having it.

If you could have a peercoin node w/bip32/HD wallet, you could have it minting, and have a mobile light wallet w/the same xpriv seed for daily use transactions.

Hello I was wondering if devs could help me understand how does peercoin seperate POS & POW blocks for difficulty targeting properly and how does it split the ratio (just the block time targets)?
I would also be wondering if there is reason difficulty retarget has not been changed to something like LWMA/DigiShield, etc, such as a POS issue that prevents it
Avatar
technium 10-Jun-18 03:57 AM
On our coin thats partially forked of peercoin, we switched to more modern retarget algo and it seems all blocks speed up to ~<1s/block avgs using both LWMA & Digishield, and we cant figure out quite why

Avatar
GitHub BOT 11-Jun-18 03:27 AM
I agree this coinbase issue is unrelated to this RFC and should be discussed elsewhere. I'd rather use a protocol rule to fix it though. Having custom block validity rules on nodes reduces the network stability. And we can fix the problem with a soft fork.
This coinbase problem has nothing to do with this RFC. I don't think it's worth mentioning.
Avatar
GitHub BOT 11-Jun-18 04:08 AM
I think this should be in the Motivation section, or at least mentioned there since it's one of the motivations. And it should probably be noted that it's a minor benefit. The scope of affected tools is very small (much smaller than the timestamp removal).
I don't think we need to list dependencies as drawbacks. There could be a section about prerequisites or something though, because the summary should not be the only place to mention that (I think we should be able to skip the summary and still have all the information).
There is absolutely no reason not to do RFC0002 if we are doing RFC0004.
Yes there are. RFC 2 is a big protocol change. It means there are risks and it increases code complexity, mostly because we have to handle both ...
Avatar
GitHub BOT 11-Jun-18 06:22 AM
A drawback that is not mentioned is that all existing tools that already handle this timestamp (in raw transactions) will have to be updated. And new tools adapted from bitcoin ecosystem will still have to be updated to change the transaction version. Also, if Bitcoin ever changes its version number to the same version as us, we will certainly not be compatible. We may need a transition time where both transaction formats are accepted, to give people some time to upgrade their tools. ...
Given the main benefit is the ability to implement RFC 3 (the tool compatibility is very minor), to me the acceptance of RFC 2 depends on the acceptance of RFC 3.
Avatar
GitHub BOT 11-Jun-18 06:38 AM
I think the benefits of this RFC are not worth the effort and complexity increase (most of the complexity comes from the required RFC 2 which would be implemented only for this RFC). I think this effort would be better spent in a true cold minting implementation that enables minting without having to bring the private keys online regularly.

@sigmike @hrobeers please take another look, especially on the 'Synergy with Cold Minting' section. The line about using the block banning mechanism in the pool op switching process can actually be applied without cold minting. Switching pool ops in vanilla multisig minting without burning coinage leaves behind signed coinstake txns with the old pool op, is double minting the same signed coinstakes a viable method to kill them?

With the coinbase and coinstake transaction splitted, the coinstake (coinburn) transaction behaves just like any regular transaction. So special rules would be required to allow it to be moved using "mint keys", but I guess that's the entire point of sigmike's cold minting.
Not sure secure is the right word here. It is rather socialisation without risk to lose your coins. Secure could give the impression the reward output can be signed up front, which is not the case.

With my currently proposed implementation for cold minting the pool operator would indeed not be allowed to socialize the reward. That's a design choice (https://talk.peercoin.net/t/cold-storage-minting-proposal/2336/125) that can be changed. We can also change the design to let the owner choose when he creates the address whether the minter is allowed to get the reward or not. I still think it's better to prevent pools, but that's only my personal opinion.

It can, but it may require a special case in the block signature code, depending on how each solution is implemented.
Avatar
GitHub BOT 15-Jul-18 08:47 AM
Actually I think multisig minting is already possible without this RFC. The public key used to verify the block signature is the key of the second output of the CoinStake, not its input[1]. So we should be able to make a block from a multisig output. The only restriction should be that second output of the CoinStake must be a pay-to-pubkey script, and this pubkey will be used to ve...
Avatar
GitHub BOT 15-Jul-18 10:23 AM
That sounds like we can start implementing minting pools right now, all we have to do is make a good user interface. A user can make a 2-of-3 multisig address, form a coinstake txn with an output to an address corresponding to one of the 2 remaining multisig keys and sign once, then give the txn along with that key to a pool operator. The pool can then mint and socialize the rewards, using that key to signature the block. Is that correct?
Avatar
GitHub BOT 15-Jul-18 11:04 AM
Yes, but since there's still the timestamp in the transaction, the partially signed CoinStake must also have a time that will (most likely) make it a valid proof of stake. I think there are programs to find that time. It would be interesting to verify all that on testnet.

I came across a possible issue that unfortunately did not came out of the review process yet. To me this issue seems to be the legitimation of the existance of the timestamp. Peercoin transactions are not allowed to have a timestamp prior to the coins they spend. Which is logical, since they are required to burn coindays (or at least keep them equal). Blocks are not required to have increasing timestamps to allow clockdrift between miners and minters. Therefore, transactions spending r...
Avatar
GitHub BOT 25-Jul-18 03:54 AM
Thanks for reopening the issue. I still need to process this fully but i have a couple reactions. Supporting 2 tx formats does seem excessively complicated. If the txs spending recently transacted outputs need to wait for an extra block or three due to time drift and out of order block (now tx) timestamp, that doesn't seem such a big deal to me.
Avatar
GitHub BOT 25-Jul-18 08:17 AM
This might complicate the ecosystem considerably so therefore I'd like to reopen this discussion.
I agree, and learning this now I am thinking to stop pursuing this RFC.
They will pend in the mempool until a block is mined with a timestamp higher than the previous transaction's block.
This will hurt user experience a lot. It becomes clear that minting transactions should be separated from normal monetary transactions.

I don't think this is a big hit to user experience. It would only affect those trying to transact a chain of transactions in several sequential blocks. That is a rare occurance in the current climate, and arguably not the purpose of the chain in general. Transacting every block is like the blockchain form of microtransactions.

The is extra complexity can easily be hidden for the user (either GUI or RPC). The transaction version does not need to be incremented in the classic way (+1), a bit flag could be set to indicate a transaction without timestamp, so both can keep coexisting even when a later fork increments the version number. How I see a possible coexistence is in the ability to run the raw RPC interface in 'bitcoin compatibility mode' dropping the transaction timestamp in raw transactions. While in the def...

Peercoin transactions are not allowed to have a timestamp prior to the coins they spend.
Which is logical, since they are required to burn coindays (or at least keep them equal). Can't we remove this restriction? If the maximum decrease is what is allowed in block time drift it doesn't seem to be an issue. And if an attacker does that repeatedly on his own chain the difficulty would increase way too much for this be be beneficial for anything.

I am unable to push to master. So here is a draft of a new page: # Peercoin proof of stake >Peercoin uses both the Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake algorithms. The PoW algorithm is used to spread the distribution of new coins. Up to 99% of all peercoins is created with POW. Proof-of-Stake is used to secure the network: The chain with longest POS coin age wins in case of a blockchain split-up. Minting, as it is called in peercoin to make a proof of stake block, is based on metrics of ...

Issue fixed. The default behavior to detect user language is: 1. Check if user has a ppc-user-language key in localStorage (useful if user wants to force another language instead of using its browser's default); 2. If don't, use navigator.language to detect language; 3. If that fails, defaults to en-US. i18n files are located at app/assets/locales. i18n files must have the same name as the language/country code. e.g. en-US, pt-BR, hr-HR, etc.

What's the difference between MAX_BLOCK_SIZE, MAX_BLOCK_SIZE_GEN, DEFAULT_BLOCK_MAX_SIZE and DEFAULT_BLOCK_PRIORITY_SIZE
I'm a bit new to POS thing . If anyone can explain the differences it will be a great help
thanks
Avatar
saeed.taurus 27-Aug-18 10:51 AM
Great ask @Raffey11
I was looking for the same
So far what i understand is that
there are two types as defined in the comments
First there is the MAX_BLOCK_SIZE is the default block size of the Peercoin. which is mentioned in bytes
i-e 100000 Bytes = 1 Mb
DEFAULT_BLOCK_PRIORITY_SIZE is there for the optimization thing where all the low fee or maybe zero fee transactions are mined.
I guess it is a POS thing
And MAX_BLOCK_SIZE_GEN & DEFAULT_BLOCK_MAX_SIZE are the spot which is Itchy XD
I don't really understand the difference here.
@peerchemist mate can you please put in some insight(edited)

Peercoin economic model is set around hardcoded transaction fee which is transaction size in kB * 0.01 Peercoin / kB, however it starts from 0.01 Peercoin which is lowest possible fee. This rule (MIN_FEE) is protocol level rule and changing it requires network to execute hard fork and set new set of rules. Making this rule a standardness rule which defines whether transaction gets relayed or not allows for easier tweaking of the rule and removes the need for network hardforks. It is propos...

The question is whether to simply set the MINFEE to 0.001 Peercoin and call it a day. Or do it via standardness rule. Having it as standardness may lead to minters/miners attaching super low fee transactions to the blockchain though.

I have a bit strange request and not sure if anyone will give me hand, but I'm trying to learn about blockchain and I'm trying to clone the peercoin and restart the blockchain to see if I can connect and mine the genesis block, but I don't seem to be able to delete the old genesis block data and my client always looks to connect. Would anyone give me hand and advice me what do I need to do to be able to restart the chain? I would be really gratefull, thanks.

While PoS inflation can currently be up to 1% per year, in reality only a fraction of the existing coins participate in the minting process. This RFC will seek to continuously adjust the PoS block reward such that PoS inflation approximates to 1%/year on average, no matter how much PoS participation there is. In general, this RFC will look into the intricacies of tying a block reward to the total supply, as well as how to safely implement a fluctuating block reward. https://github.com/peer...

Not yet ready for merging in any case, looking for some feedback. The original code was hard for me to read and maintain a mental model of, but mostly due to visual clutter. Some of the ways that could be improved were immediately obvious. As I pulled out chunks of code into the Kernel namespace, the remaining code gradually became easier to follow. I've explored different ways of wiring the pieces back together, eventually converging to what you see here. My priority was to identify ...

I like the idea of refactoring parts of Peercoin for rebase version. I'm always worried about performance implications of everything we add to Peercoin, so I feel it would be great to see some performance testing of such refactoring. I wonder if it's possible if current branch is not building. Your version of coinstake part of Kernel.cpp reads better than original, I'd love to see it complete and working so real tests can be performed.

I think this will allow bigger rewards after the protocol change. In the current protocol when the CoinStake has a size that requires the minimum fee (0.01 PPC), it is allowed to get the full reward (proof reward - 0.01 + 0.01). With this PR and after the protocol switch, when the CoinStake has a size that requires the minimum fee (0.001 PPC), it is allowed to get the full reward + 0.009 PPC (proof reward - 0.001 + 0.01).
I think the condition here has always been false in Peercoin given the code above, and still is, so it may be the time to finally remove this block.

First of all, any protocol change must be protected by a protocol switch like IsProtocolV07() etc. This change appears unprotected, even though older blocks are ok as it is a loosening of the check, it's not okay during the upgrade window and is a potential cause for forks. This also appears to be an unnecessary protocol change to me. Generally speaking minor protocol changes should be discouraged as there is a cost to maintain any protocol change. It's not just a matter of how many lines ...

According to RFC 0007, the rate should stay at 1 cent / KB, not sure why this is needed to change then. It should be the actually calculation when rounding to KB that needs to be changed. See my comment there in CTransaction::GetMinFee()
Avatar
GitHub BOT 15-Dec-18 04:24 PM
First the logic of fees have been changed too much so I am not sure that it is safe to go like this. As I mentioned, MIN_TX_FEE is a protocol parameter that should have stayed the same. The else condition here is supposed to be the pre ProtocolV07 but since MIN_TX_FEE has changed, there is no guarantee that it is still the same as pre ProtocolV07. The best practice is to avoid such complexities when dealing with protocol changes. The formula (nBytes * nBaseFee / 1000) is preferred to be wr...

GitHub BOT 17-Dec-18 06:12 AM
This change should only apply after the protocol change, otherwise upgraded and non-upgraded clients can disagree (and fork) before the protocol upgrade.
According to my review the new code does work as before when protocol v07 is not enabled, and as described in the RFC after it has been enabled. But I agree the change is too complex, it took me too much time to verify that and it increases the risk I made a mistake.
The RFC says the rate stays the same but the minimum fee is changed from 0.01 to 0.001, so this change seems appropriate. But I think it's confusing. Maybe using 2 defines MIN_TX_FEE_PRE_PROTOCOL_V07 and MIN_TX_FEE_PROTOCOL_V07 or something would be better. With this RFC applied there isn't a single min fee anymore from the blockchain perspective.

Still, if MIN_TX_FEE is redefined, every place in the protocol that MIN_TX_FEE is referenced must be protected by protocol upgrade protection IsProtocolV07(). For example: main.h:static const int64 MIN_TXOUT_AMOUNT = MIN_TX_FEE; this defines the minimum output amount. If left unprotected, it's a fork hazard.
