PPC inflation in comparison to other alt-coins

(Updated 2013-06-10: added Namecoin)

I was curious about the real inflation rate (=growth of the money supply) of major altcoins, in comparison to BTC. So I created this little “investigation” with the blockchain explorers.

I took the total amount of each coin at 2013-06-06 at 7:50 AM and compared it to the value of 2013-05-27 at the same time. The result is an approximation to the inflation for the last 10 days.

I took all major altcoins which were created more than 30 days ago, because in the case of very young coins the inflation rate would drop significantly in the next weeks (for this reason, BTB has the highest inflation in the table).

Here is the list (in %), including an estimate for 30 day- and 365 day-inflation. (Obviously it’s not the real monthly and yearly inflation but the actual inflation rate projected to 30 and 365 days)

(Actualized 2013-06-09, NMC added, BTE data actualized to same data points)

  • Young coins with less than 90 days of age.

Coins with a low block creation rate (BTE: last block 2013-05-31, CNC: about 5 blocks a day). Seems the difficulty is too high for the actual hashrate. In the case of BTE I took the 10 last days of May because there were no blocks in June (dead?)

Yes PPC has the lowest inflation of all altcoins, lower than LTC/NMC/DVC, much lower than the new altcoins. CNC and BTE are seriously stuck chains, FRC and FTC have much higher inflation rates once they climb out of the slowdown.

Fascinating numbers. I’d really be curious to see the difference between the inflation of the previous version of Novacoin and the current one where the stake reward percentage was massively jacked up.

I will try to update the thread every month, so we have a continous inflation index, and so we could follow trends like the Novacoin issue and the CNC/BTE blockchain problems.

Feel free to comment the Bitcointalk thread too

i like this, a question I had in my mind answered!

Great post, thanks for sharing this. Very informational.

I have updated the thread as I had added Namecoin in the original Bitcointalk thread and updated the BTE data to the same points in time than the other coins. By the way: BTE, CNC and FTC are having massive problems at the moment, so we’ll see if this coins will survive.

Great supply growth chart! To get the inflation we would have to compare the PPC exchange pricing to fiat money over time and that would be some crazy chart…

Actually when we speak colloquially about inflation, we mean not the “exchange rate” but the “consumer price index”. But there is very little information about prices for consumer goods in PPC for now  So a full-fledged inflation index would not be possible until PPC gets more usage as a currency.

Exactly, so in our case consumer price index is based on how much fiat money we can get for the PPC thus you can buy anything you want with PPC, all you have to do is exchange it first. Anyway, my point was that it is a great chart and I APPRECIATE THE WORK YOU PUT IN IT.

Yes, I got it, thanks  Was just an idea how I could improve this in the future, although there is a long way to go still until a real PPC inflation index is possible. First step would probably be a market like the new Feathercoin marketplace. But even with BTC a consumer prices index would be difficult for now since most shops use BitPay or other BTC-to-fiat processors.

Very interesting numbers. Maybe I was wrong?

I think PPC needs some startups and mechanisms for people to buy PPC direct with USD.
