Peercoin's score on CoinGecko

Hey everyone,

I thought it was strange that Peercoin has such a low score (15th place) on CoinGecko, a site that ranks coins according a variety of metrics, instead of just market cap like other sites.

Peercoin’s developer score that tracks activity on github is particularly low. This seems to be due to Peercoin’s unusual situation where development is divided between two different repos: Peerunity and ppcoin.

I contacted CoinGecko to let them know about this, and they seem to be willing to look into it and see if anything can be done. The problem is that their code only allows them to track one repo at a time, and it is understandable that they probably don’t want to make any big changes just to accommodate Peercoin.

They asked that if they were to only track one repo, which one would I recommend. Ideally it would be both of course, as both are considered official Peercoin clients, but if that’s not possible then I’m not sure. Peerunity is probably more active and is seen as our “mainstream” client for most users, but ppcoin is still the original core protocol despite its inactivity.

What do you think?

I’m not sure what to think.

[ul][li]Peerunity is the recommended wallet so I think it can be ok to track the development of that repo.[/li]
[li]But the protocol development is reflected by the development activity in the Peercoin repo.[/li][/ul]

From an advertizing perspective on CoinGecko tracking the Peerunity repo would be the wise choice as long as it’s not possible to include results from multiple repos.

Well, checking the metrics on that site:

PPC is (only for sha256 algoritm):
#4 overall
#2 market cap
#2 liquidity
#2 community
#3 public interest

I think we can see the ppc classification regarding the developer metric as a stable, error free, little fuzz (in this aspect) cryptocoin…

With the release of peerunity 0.1.2, I think our dev team has been seriously underscored.
And good job to river333 by reaching out to the coingecko. The scores should be combined, plus nubits development.
A fundamental revolution is taking shape.

The main repo is be definition the most active repo, imho.

I agree, ignoring Peerunity doesn’t give an accurate score as most, if not all other coins only seem to have one repo for central development.

I don’t think nubits should be added as it is a separate project. I guess that maybe CoinGecko don’t want every coin to start asking for other repos if they allow Peercoin to add one. The situation with Peerunity is kind of unique though as Sunny King doesn’t seem interested in allowing community additions to the main repo.

Can you expand on what you mean by this? There has been no new commits in months, or are you saying Peerunity is now the main repo?

Yes the peerunity repo is the most active repo (and it is a superset over the reference repo) so it should be considered the main repo. In the future there could be many wallets of different flavors developed by different groups based on the reference repo, the most active one should be considered the main repo, if the sum of all repos cannot be considered.

Ok, that makes sense to me. I’ll link CoinGecko to this thread and they can decide if they want to make any changes.

As River noted, Nu does not belong attached to Peercoin. Different projects completely.

The repo was replaced with Peerunity yesterday and the site has now updated. Thanks to CoinGecko for making the change.

Peercoin’s development score has increased by 18 points, causing Peercoin’s overall rank to move from 15th to 9th!

Well done! I want to make a donation to coingecko but couldn’t find any ppc address.
Is it possible to list one?

I’ll pass on your message to them.

By the way, Peercoin is now up to 6th place

Sounds right.

They added an address to the website footer.
