Indefinite "stratum detected new block" at 4 hash/s (OS X)

Hi everyone. I’m extremely new to crypto currencies and stumbled upon peer coin by accident. I realize, though, that this is much better than BTC/LTC mining due to the fact that it uses much less energy and is much simpler to figure out. I ran into a bit of a problem, though. Using macminer CPUminer interface, I entered my worker info and saved it. I went to start mining, and it seemed to work at first. However, all it’s doing is repeating this, indefinitely until it stops. It also says “Starting…” at the top without changing.

I’m not sure what’s going on or what I did wrong, but I’m really excited to start doing this, so I really need help. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi and welcome Benneyb123.

Yours is a normal log when mining peercoin with a CPU. The problem is your hashrate is so low you don’t get any accepted shares as you would with a low difficulty coin. With the rise of ASICS, cpu mining is not worth any more. You maybe can get some accepted shares in a pool with low starting difficulty, but probably you’ll spend more in energy than the PPC/BTC/LTC you obtain.

About the message, every time a block is found in the network, you’ll see the “Stratum detected new block”. That doesn’t mean you or the pool find it, just there’s a new one in the peercoin network and is detected by stratum.

I see…Ben told me about an ASIC USB miner at 330mhash/s, would that be profitable? I also failed to mention my friend is helping me mine into a single pool on his computer, which is windows. Would 1 USB for each of us get us a profit in PPC?

You won’t get much with 1 usb for each. Being optimistic and at the current difficulty, you’d make ~0’01 PPC/day, so about ~3 PPC/year per USB. But difficulty will probably grow and you have to pay for electricity and pool/transaction fees. So I’d invest the money of that USB in buying some PPC and enabling POS minting.

Of course if you belive one day PPC will be much more expensive and make that 0’01/day worth, or If you just want to start in the mining world and see If you are capable to or any other reason I may not think about right now, go ahead.
