You can buy from merchants, there are many places that accept Bitcoin. You can use it for technical applications, which ‘spends’ coins via the fee. You can speculate with it. The idea is that it is a distributed record that you know you can refer back to at a later period in time to prove ownership, either for coins or for information or what have you.
